There are plenty of ways to measure the success of an art program. One of the most telling might be the fact that SAS students regularly gain admission to some of the world’s top art, design, and film schools. But an equally revealing indicator? The enthusiastic exclamations of our students as they step into an art learning space: “Yes! We have art today!”
In elementary school, our budding artists lay the groundwork with classes in art and music, lessons emphasizing dance and movement, and, starting in grade 5, the exciting choice between band and orchestra. For those with a flair for drama, there are also opportunities to take part in plays.
Middle school introduces choir and theater into the mix, allowing students to hone new skills. Extracurricular activities give middle schoolers the chance to workshop and perform with peers through ISTA (International School Theatre Association) and AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools).
In high school, the opportunities multiply with various bands, orchestras, choirs, dance, and theater integrated into the curriculum—even within our IB program. Fun fact: we’re the only international school in Shanghai offering IB dance. High school artists and performers can compete in APAC (Asia Pacific Activities Conference) events across dance, theater, band, choir, and orchestra. And for those craving even more stage time? Student-organized and rehearsed shows like Pudong Rocks and Perform to Transform await.
Throughout all these programs, our students collaborate with visiting experts and artists-in-residence, all while integrating 21st-century design and technology skills. And we've got the facilities to match their talents—each campus boasts a stunning Performing Arts Center, recording studios, and multiple black box theaters. So, whether it's a brushstroke or a spotlight, our students are ready to shine.
