How our community gets involved
For new families and students, or our Eagles who are moving up from elementary to middle and from middle to high, SAS builds support in along the way through student ambassadors and the PTSA newcomers committee.
The Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) is really the backbone of the Shanghai American School community. They’re all about making families feel right at home, even though home might be far away. The PTSA connects parents through socials and events, where they can get the lowdown on life in Shanghai and at SAS. PTSA puts on some of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year - Spring Carnival, International Fair, Winter Carnival and the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. They also provide support specifically for our students with events like the Chinese New Year Temple Fair and the senior breakfast.
The Booster Clubs are the groups of parents who pump up the school spirit by cheering on our athletes and performers at their games or competitions. They make sure everyone feels welcome and supported – and also well fed with hot dogs and barbecue at sporting events throughout the year. Whether students are involved in sports, theater, music, the arts, or all the above, their experiences are enriched by the tireless efforts of the Boosters.
If that weren't enough, we've got a few traditions to mention as well. With a history over 100 years old, we've collected quite a few. The stealing of the Bust of Juno, Turkey Bowl, Sidewalks & Sprinklers, Cardboard Challenge, and the Senior Walk. These annual events are the perfect setting to bring our students and teachers together to get involved, collaborate, and maybe make a new friend along the way.
Our strong sense of community stems from our core values rooted in DEIB. Shanghai American School doesn't just have beliefs of diversity and equity, but take actions of inclusion and belonging to ensure all members of our community feel seen, valued, and connected.
