Alumni Legends | Shanghai Girl: Betty Barr ‘49

We know we’re not supposed to have favorites, but…. we’ve got to admit, SAS alumna Betty Barr holds a very special place in our hearts. And the feeling is mutual. She might have graduated over 70 years ago, but she still makes trips to school, is a regular at graduation ceremonies, and her closest pals are still her high school classmates.

This spring, we spent the day with Betty at one of SAS’s original campuses in Hengshan Road to listen to her stories of life at SAS. Watch as she reflects upon being born and raised in Shanghai, returning later in life to be with her husband, George, and her hope for future SAS alumni. Betty Barr truly embodies our slogan: “Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle.”
