SAS Career Immersion: A Day at the Symphony
We are excited to announce the launch of our Career Immersion Program—an engaging initiative that provides SAS high school students with experiences designed to give them an insider’s view into work across various industries. This new program connects students with professionals, giving them a firsthand look at career options within a given field.
On October 30, SAS high school students visited Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO), one of the best-known orchestral ensembles in Asia, gaining a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of Shanghai’s premier musical institutions. 16 students toured the orchestra's renowned Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall, which uses innovative floating architecture on steel springs to enhance acoustics and minimize outside noise. Junior James C said, “Every inch of the space is crafted for sound quality and the listener’s experience.”
The visit included a private rehearsal led by conductor Huang Yi, celebrating Richard Strauss’s 160th anniversary, along with a career discussion featuring Lin Zhu, the Principal Cellist, and Peter Solomon, the Principal Horn. These musicians shared the joys and challenges of their work, inspiring students to consider if music as a profession might be the right fit for them. “Pursuing a musical career is arduous but rewarding for those who love playing music.” Senior Vincent W shared.
This insightful visit left students with a greater appreciation for a career in the arts and the discipline and passion required to succeed. Senior Isabella S summed it up: "Our visit to the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra was an eye-opening experience that deepened our appreciation for music and its cultural significance. It reminded us of the power of music in bringing people together, and all the contributions behind –the-scenes made by hundreds of people."
Through Career Immersion, SAS is providing real-world transformative experiences to our students, helping them explore future career options and consider how their passions today could be pursued tomorrow.
